RYA Start Yachting
Start Yachting is the entry level RYA cruising course. It provides a short introduction to sail cruising and gives the participant the chance to experience steering a yacht, sail handling, rope work, and to be aware of safety onboard.
Day one - The course is run from the historic Port of Falmouth and is usually taken over a weekend. You will join the boat at around 5pm on Friday afternoon with the course finishing around 2pm on Sunday. The course will commence with a full safety brief that our instructors will make fun and interesting. Depending on the time and weather conditions you will then experience a gentle voyage to the first overnight anchorage, mooring buoy or pontoon.
Day Two - We usually plan to start the sailing early so you can expect the skipper to kick things off with a large mug of steaming tea or coffee, a hearty breakfast whilst listening to the weather forecast. After breakfast your instructor will explain the basics of sailing & how the sails are put up and down. You will then spend a some time taking turns on the helm and handling the ropes through various basic manoeuvres. The instructor will also take the time to demonstrate why the boat will not capsize so before you know it you shall be confidently slipping along with the boat healing (leaning) over, as they are designed to do. After lunch you will practice some ’man overboard’ drills before making a short coastal passage to either Fowey or the Helford River if the weather permits. To finish a rewarding first day you will have the opportunity to go ashore to a local waterside pub before retiring to the boat for dinner to learn some knots and relax.
Day Three- starts as before and will recap on what you have learned the previous day. During the passage home everyone will have the chance to steer the boat and handle the sails before you dock. We usually plan to get alongside around an hour before we finish so everyone can clean the boat together, an essential part of being able crew!
Course Notes
Accommodation & meals are provided on board throughout the weekend as well as use of wet weather gear if necessary. You will need to bring a sleeping bag & suitable flat soled non-slip and non-marking footwear.
Warm clothing also will be needed even in the height of summer, as on the water the evenings can get cooler than inland.
Hopefully you now fancy the chance to get on the water a see what its all about, so give us a call or email us today!
If you have a wonderful time and want to do more sailing, the Start Yachting course completion certificate can be up-graded to a Competent Crew certificate upon completion of a further 3 day weekend course.
