Harbours North of Falmouth
The Carrick Roads extend north of Falmouth and meets the mouth of the Carnon River which extends further inland to the Cathedral City of Truro.
En-route there is plenty of beautiful and peaceful creeks anchorages to explore. On the west side of the Carrick Roads, there are good marina facilities located at Mylor Yacht Harbour.
A little further north, Restronguet Creek leads thirsty sailors to the famous Pandora Inn, (reputably once owned by ‘Black Beard’ the pirate), where you may moor alongside the pontoon around high tide for good food and refreshments.
There is plenty of good anchoring on the East side of the ‘Roads’ overlooked by the Roseland Peninsular and the village of St Just in Roseland. Upon entering the Carnon River you’ll find more peaceful anchorages under the gaze of the impressive Trelissick house.
Truro Harbour Authority provide a number of pontoons in the river which are perfect for an over night stay, lunch or lazy afternoon.
Past the mussels farm and impressively large merchant ships which lay-up in the deep glacier carved river, the historic Smugglers Cottage at Tolverne has about a dozen visitor moorings...
...available and was featured in the recent programme ‘Three men in more than one boat’ with Griff Rhys Jones and Rory McGrath. They offer drinks, food and Cornish cream teas but close early, even in summer when the day trippers leave. (Last year they closed around 2030hrs, although they entertain us later than that if we had a group. Probably best to give them a call!).
Beyond the ‘Smugglers’ the river extends to Malpas where there are visitor moorings and a pontoon for vessels under 24ft in length.
From Malpas the city of Truro is only a 20 minute walk along the upper reaches of the river. Along with good walking at Malpas you will find the Heron Inn which takes its name from the plentiful birds along the banks of the river.
